How to Install Canards (Front Bumper Canards) – Step-by-Step Guide
Canards (also called front bumper canards or splitter winglets) add a sharper, motorsport-style look to the front corners of the bumper. Because they’re small parts installed on curved surfaces, the difference between a clean result and a messy one is all about positioning, surface prep, and correct bonding/fastening.
This guide covers the most common mounting methods: 3M VHB tape, hardware (screws/bolts), or a combined install (recommended for long-term durability).
What You’ll Need
Tools
-
Measuring tape or ruler
-
Painter’s tape (masking tape)
-
Marker or pencil
-
Microfiber towels
-
Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) 70%–99%
-
Heat gun / hair dryer (recommended)
-
Drill + small drill bits (only if using hardware)
-
Screwdriver / bit set
Materials
-
3M VHB tape (if included/required)
-
3M adhesion promoter (highly recommended)
-
Included screws/bolts/washers (if your kit uses hardware)
-
Optional: medium threadlocker (for bolts)
Step 1: Decide on Placement (Symmetry Matters)
-
Clean the bumper corner quickly so tape sticks during test fitting.
-
Hold the canard in place and choose a position that:
-
Follows the bumper line naturally
-
Matches left and right sides perfectly
-
Clears parking sensors and trim edges
-
Use painter’s tape to mark:
-
The top edge position
-
The rear edge position
-
A small center reference point
Step 2: Test Fit (Dry Fit)
Before you remove any backing:
-
Confirm the canard sits flush with minimal gaps.
-
Open/close anything nearby (if applicable) and ensure it doesn’t interfere.
-
Check the viewing angle from a few steps back to confirm the look is even.
If there are big gaps, you may need a different position or a combined hardware install.
Step 3: Proper Surface Prep (Most Important Step)
-
Wash the area and dry it completely.
-
Wipe the mounting zone with IPA (repeat twice).
-
Apply 3M adhesion promoter only where the tape will touch (thin layer).
-
Let it flash off for a few minutes (per product instructions).
This prevents lifting corners and tape failure over time.
Step 4: Tape-Only Installation (If Your Kit Uses 3M VHB)
-
Apply 3M VHB tape to the canard (if not pre-applied). Press firmly along the tape.
-
Peel a small section of the tape liner and create pull tabs.
-
Align the canard using your tape marks.
-
Press lightly to “set” the position.
-
Pull the tape liners out slowly while maintaining pressure.
Press time: Press firmly for 60–90 seconds across the entire canard.
Cure time:
-
Avoid washing for 24–48 hours
-
Full bond strength usually develops over ~72 hours
Step 5: Hardware Installation (Recommended for Long-Term Use)
If your canards include screws/bolts, this is typically the most secure method.
-
With the canard aligned, mark the hole locations on the bumper.
-
Remove the canard and drill small pilot holes (start small).
-
Reposition the canard and install hardware loosely at first.
-
Tighten evenly until secure—do not overtighten (you can crack plastic or deform the part).
Best practice: Use washers to spread load and avoid stress marks.
Step 6: Combined Method (Best Overall)
For the strongest install:
-
Use 3M VHB tape to hold flush contact and prevent vibration
-
Use hardware to lock the canard mechanically
This reduces rattles, keeps the canard seated, and improves durability at higher speeds.
Final Checks
Before driving:
-
Push-test: the canard should not move.
-
Confirm both sides sit at the same angle and height.
-
Check for tape edges that aren’t fully pressed down.
After 7–14 days:
-
Re-check hardware tightness (normal for new installs).
Aftercare Tips
-
Avoid pressure washing directly at the edges for the first week.
-
If a corner starts lifting, it’s usually due to poor prep or cold installation conditions.
-
In cold weather, warm the surface and part slightly before bonding (low heat).
